Meet Rabbi Steve

Rabbi Stephen Robbins
Rabbi Steve is a wise, sensitive, kind person, a master of both the mystical and intellectual traditions of Jewish thought. He began his Rabbinic studies at age 16 at Hebrew Union College in 1960, following in the tradition of a long line of Rabbis in the Luria family that goes all the way back to the middle fourteenth century in the Kabbalist community of Southern France and Northern Spain. He was ordained in 1972 and has spent his combined 45 years of Rabbinic professional life serving in a variety settings including Hillel at University of Cincinnati and at University of California Berkeley, followed by 16 years as Rabbi of Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills, California before he and Hazzan Eva created N’vay shalom. In addition he has been in private practice as a Clinical Psychologist and Naturopathic practitioner and min /body healer. All of this has led to his unique multi-disciplinary approach to Judaism with an emphasis on his Kabbalistic roots and their expression in his Rabbinate. This heritage of mystic study and experience has shaped his unique approach to understanding text and teaching Torah.

As a Rabbi, Kabbalist, and psychologist with extensive study in medicine, neuroscience, physics and psychobiology, he provides a multidisciplinary approach that is unique. Rabbi Steve is recognized throughout the world for his breadth of knowledge and ability to synthesize all of these disciplines to open our hearts and minds to God in a unique way. He has served as a consultant for other Rabbis, physicians and congregants from all over the world. He is the co-founder of the Academy for Jewish Religion/California, which is the first Transdenominational seminary on the West Coast. Rabbi also is on the faculty teaching liturgy, mysticism and professional skills. As past-President he helped establish the primary philosophy and curriculum of the Academy and has set it on a path toward Academy accreditation. In addition he has been actively teaching the ancient technique of Kabbalist meditation for the ten years at the University of Judaism, N’vay shalom and Shabbatons around the country.

Rabbi Steve’s warm and accepting nature makes him accessible to all. He is an empath and has been able to bring important moments of healing into the life of our congregation. Whether in communal settings or individual meetings with congregants, he provides a profoundly healing touch to the bodies, minds and spirits of all who come in contact with his gentle presence. Rabbi Steve has developed modern applications to the ancient mystic traditions and is sought out by many people throughout the world.

Rabbi Steve and Hazzan Eva have been married for 33 years and together they have carved a unique partnership that reflects the mystic notion of the male and female union and its impact in the spiritual expression of Jewish life. Husband and wife, male and female, words and music, together they hold our community in love and joy.
